“PURPOSE BEYOND PRODUCTIVITY”

Some customers will want a continuing role in what they care about.

There is a difference between following a community and being expected somewhere on Saturday. A place in the group can bring responsibility, recognition and relationships that continue after a purchase. It can also become another demand on a person who already has plenty.

When a person hands more tasks to software, some of the things through which they felt useful may change. That need not mean losing a job or gaining free afternoons. It could mean having less direct involvement in work they once recognized as their contribution. “PURPOSE BEYOND PRODUCTIVITY” explores a less-established possibility: for some people, a chosen ongoing role elsewhere could become more desirable.

A service could help them find a manageable role in a local project, a shared practice or a group that keeps going. That creates an opportunity beyond selling an inspiring story about belonging.

A role needs room in a life

Jenny Odell’s 2023 account of time connects individual freedom with relationships, power and practical support. It is a useful foundation for understanding why a person cannot simply decide to have more meaningful afternoons. Someone else’s schedule, transport, care responsibilities or paid work may determine what is possible. [78]

AI could make coordination easier: preparing materials, matching availability or helping a newcomer understand how to contribute. Whether that creates more participation depends on the surrounding arrangement. A well-timed invitation is useful only if the role is one the person can sustain.

If you build a membership or community offer, make clear what participants can expect of one another and of you. Someone should know whether they are a customer, volunteer or worker. Do not shift between those roles when it becomes convenient to ask for unpaid labor.

Contribution people can choose

Caring for others can be valuable and exhausting at the same time. A commercial offer that praises purpose while leaving people unsupported may reproduce exactly the burden they hoped to escape. Fair payment, manageable commitments and the ability to leave belong in the design.

Over the next one to three years, we would look for offers that help people become recognizable contributors without demanding constant availability. A recurring repair group, shared stewardship or skill exchange could provide that kind of role. Their appeal would depend on relationships people actually develop, well beyond the initial match.

Other customers will want rest, privacy or entertainment, and may have no wish to contribute anything else. The opportunity is specific to people seeking this relationship. Find out what they want to be responsible for, what support would make it feasible and what remains valuable after the first enthusiastic session.

About this research edition

This article draws on selected sources and our interpretation of their implications for consumers. The wider collection contains 50 articles and original illustrations. We have not read everything by everyone on the reading list, calculated the probability of each future or established worldwide adoption. The collection is not exhaustive.

The illustrations are AI-generated, with a visual approach informed by TrendWatching’s 2024 and 2025 reports. They depict ideas rather than observed events. If an article’s central idea changes, its image needs another look. Small edits need not mean a new illustration; automatic replacement is not active.

Each innovation has a source, a review date and an explanation of its relevance and limits. Some are early signs of the change; others offer a useful comparison. None proves the forecast. Monthly monitoring and automatic selection of new examples are not running.
