ABOUT SERIOUS SHIFT

About Serious Shift

Created by TrendWatching, drawing on leading thinkers and our own analysts’ thinking.

A wider world of thinking. A consumer point of view.

Serious Shift is a TrendWatching initiative, shaped by our own thinking about human needs and consumer change, and by people exploring what AI could do to our lives. Researchers are testing its effects on our choices. Economists are examining work and income. Philosophers and writers are asking what might make a good life in very different circumstances.

Our growing reading list brings together more than 100 thinkers across disciplines and countries. They disagree about where AI could take us, what people might gain and what they could lose. Those differences help us ask better questions about the future.

TrendWatching connects these ideas to consumer life. What might people want, make, buy or stop buying? What could change their relationships, their sense of identity or their reasons for choosing one service over another? We develop the shifts from that thinking, explain our interpretation and link to the particular sources behind each article.

Made with AI. Directed by TrendWatching.

We use AI to help research, compare sources, develop copy and illustrations, translate the site and build it. TrendWatching sets the editorial direction, drawing on our analysts’ thinking and the work of credited outside thinkers. The synthesis and the consumer perspective are ours.

We are building toward increasingly autonomous research, with human editorial oversight.

What changes when people can do more?

AI could help someone make what they once had to buy, find company when nobody else is available, or hand over decisions they used to make themselves. It could also change their income, their relationships and the time they have to spend.

Serious Shift explores what these changes could mean for consumers over the next one to three years. We look at the wider forces behind them, too: who owns the technology, how work changes, what public services provide and who receives the benefits.

For people making the next thing

If you develop products, services, experiences or business concepts, this is for you. Bring an article into a team discussion, use it to question a brief or follow an idea into unfamiliar territory.

What would your customers want if this shift took hold? What could you help them do? What might they no longer need from you? The articles are a starting point for working through those questions.

TrendWatching brings it into consumer focus.

TrendWatching helps professionals understand emerging consumer trends and turn innovation into opportunity. Serious Shift takes that interest in human needs and consumer change into the next one to three years, drawing on thinkers whose work often reaches much further ahead.

The overall creation, the synthesis and the consumer perspective are TrendWatching’s. We bring together outside research and arguments with our analysts’ thinking, develop the shifts and consider what people could create in response. We credit the ideas we draw on and make our own interpretations clear.

Start with a shift

The ten main shifts and their sub-shifts give you a broad, grounded view of how consumer life could change. Each brings the argument, its drivers and relevant examples together. You can explore the sources when you want more depth; you do not need to work through the reading list to use the ideas.

Read the argument, follow its sources and look at the innovations alongside it. Those examples show something happening today. They cannot establish that the whole forecast will happen. Where we have not verified a suitable recent example, we say so.

The number of shifts and examples can change as the research develops. We distinguish a thinker’s argument, a research finding, our interpretation and an imagined future so you can judge the case for yourself.

Follow the idea back to its source.

Meet the thinkers, explore their work and follow the sources in each article. A research finding, an author’s argument and our imagined application do different jobs. We distinguish them so you can see how a shift was developed—and decide where you agree.

The reading list is wider than the sources used in this edition. We have not read everything published by everyone listed, and continuous monitoring is not yet running. Inclusion does not mean a thinker works with Serious Shift, endorses it or agrees with our interpretation.

And the name?

Serious Shift. Say it quickly. Some of these changes could reach into almost every part of life. We intend to give them the attention they deserve, while enjoying the chance to imagine what comes next.

A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS

Questions?

What is Serious Shift?

Serious Shift is a TrendWatching initiative exploring how AI could change consumer life over the next one to three years: what people want, do for themselves, delegate, buy or stop buying.

Who creates the shifts?

Serious Shift is built and operated with AI under TrendWatching’s editorial direction. We combine our analysts’ thinking and consumer perspective with credited research and arguments. AI helps with research, writing, illustrations, translation and building the site. Cited thinkers are not presented as collaborators or endorsers.

Are these predictions certain?

No. The articles describe possible consumer futures. Research findings, authors’ arguments, our interpretations and imagined applications are different kinds of evidence. The source notes explain their limits.

How do the main shifts, sub-shifts and drivers fit together?

A main shift describes a substantial change in consumer life. Sub-shifts examine particular expectations or behaviors within it. Drivers describe wider societal or economic changes that could help bring it about.

What do the innovations show?

Selected innovations illustrate something already happening, or offer a useful comparison. Each has a source, a review date and an explanation of its relevance and limits. No example proves that the whole forecast will happen.

Is every thinker continuously monitored?

No. The reading list is wider than the work cited in this edition. We have not read everything by everyone listed. Continuous monitoring, monthly research collection and automatic selection of new examples are not running.

How can I use Serious Shift?

Use an article to question a brief, start a team discussion or explore what customers might expect next. Follow its sources and ask what you could create for those circumstances. Read About Serious Shift for the audience and approach.

Are the illustrations photographs of real events?

No. Shift illustrations are AI-generated interpretations of the articles. Thinker photographs are separate: they have verified sources and reuse licences, credited in the directory. Initials are used where portrait reuse rights have not been verified.
