“POSSIBLE ME”

A possible life becomes something people can rehearse before committing to it.

A different career. A quieter life. The confidence to enter a room they usually avoid. People carry possible versions of themselves for years, sometimes without finding a useful way to examine them.

An AI-generated version can make that exploration conversational. A person can ask questions, try a response or change the scenario. Over the next one to three years, we expect some consumers to use these simulations as a way to think through alternatives, rather than simply create an avatar that looks like them.

“POSSIBLE ME” also has a public branch: a version authorized to speak on someone's behalf. Private rehearsal and public representation offer very different kinds of value. Confusing them could turn an experiment into a commitment the person never intended to make.

Enough detail to think with

Future You provides a research precedent. The system uses personal input to generate an older self with an invented life history. Its 2024 preregistered study found stronger reported connection to a future self after a brief interaction, alongside reduced anxiety. Several other measures, including agency and self-reflection, did not significantly improve. The study does not show that the simulation predicts a life or produces lasting change. [63]

For consumer experiences, the interesting possibility is a more tangible way to consider an alternative. A person imagining a career change might compare several fictional routines, including the parts that make each difficult. They could revise what matters as they go. The value would lie in the reflection the simulation prompts, rather than its apparent certainty about the future.

A single flattering future could narrow that exploration. Several openly invented possibilities leave more room for the person to disagree, discard an option or discover a question worth asking someone with direct experience.

When the version meets other people

A public extension has another job. Someone might want a clearly identified representative to answer routine questions about their work or a shared project. Other people would then encounter a selection of the person's knowledge, style and decisions through a system.

That makes authorization central to the experience. A version designed to explore a new conviction privately should not start presenting it as the person's settled view. A fluent answer is not permission to make a commitment. The person needs a practical way to change the remit or stop the extension altogether.

If you develop these experiences, decide which relationship you are offering first. A temporary rehearsal could be valuable precisely because the customer can abandon it. A public representative needs dependable boundaries and continuity, including an honest account of its dependence on the hosting platform.

Some consumers will find a digital version of themselves unappealing or unnecessary. For those who are interested, look beyond the novelty of meeting it. What did the experience help them understand, choose or communicate once the conversation was over?

Beauty brand e.l.f. Cosmetics and AI styling app Alta

Avatar-based look planning is a limited visual rehearsal, not the article’s deeper conversational life simulation.

Why this example is here

This is a commercial styling integration, not evidence that using an avatar changes someone’s identity. The issuer says Alta will recommend e.l.f. products; it is not a neutral comparison across all beauty brands.

About this research edition

This article draws on selected sources and our interpretation of their implications for consumers. The wider collection contains 50 articles and original illustrations. We have not read everything by everyone on the reading list, calculated the probability of each future or established worldwide adoption. The collection is not exhaustive.

The illustrations are AI-generated, with a visual approach informed by TrendWatching’s 2024 and 2025 reports. They depict ideas rather than observed events. If an article’s central idea changes, its image needs another look. Small edits need not mean a new illustration; automatic replacement is not active.

Each innovation has a source, a review date and an explanation of its relevance and limits. Some are early signs of the change; others offer a useful comparison. None proves the forecast. Monthly monitoring and automatic selection of new examples are not running.
